Rear axel outside seal question. I have new bearings & seals & manuals ( Bible) TM-1018 . I may have to much info or looking at not to screw something up? The rear seal has one side is mostly Metal other side rubber like the seals outer lips.So which way do you place seal ?? Metal side out ? But lips on seal look like dirt& dust would enter out side bearing ! The book says install outer rear axel oil seal with face of the outer case toward the driver. What's the driver ? Seal must be installed before the outer bearing cone is installed on axel . I'm I over reading this ?Just trying to put it back to last . Someone has worked on this axel before they didn't install # 3 The oil seal cup. So dirt was working around seal lips & axel housing ( a little gap ) I think the oil seal cup acts like a wear ring for seal lips . So which way to turn seal ? Look to do lead ball for bearings called dealer they do not have adjustment shims N/A. May just roll w/ old way to set bearings ? Thanks .

Driver referred to in tech manual is a tool called seal driver.Driver is round with a flat surface with a slightly smaller OD than seal that has a shaft to tap on with a hammer.
TX Jim Thanks for info .(clarification) sometimes better to ask then to find out the hard way. I was thinking of a B F H when read manual. I'll ask around to borrow the right tool. Don't have big enough driver! I seen a this site someone did a 4430. New seals & bearings looked like seal had metal side turn out to wheel ? I'll try to find photos again. He made his own shims . I called a Deere dealer about different size shims dealer said N/A .Whats up w/that ? Deere doesn't have shims or they don't do rear axel with shims?? I guess I'll do it the old way.
