Starter drives. New Barrel drive or old spring type for 12v

Which starter drive is more forgiving when a person switches to a 12v system from a 6v system on say an M tractor. Seems to me the spring style would give more when slamming into the flywheel gear. I've seen several barrel types distroyed on a 12v switch over yet many swear by them. My thought is the old spring type drive would be a better choice if using the original starter.

Opinions welcome!

Mine both still have the old style spring and have been handling 12 volts for decades with no issues. Of course when I converted mine I went with small automotive cables and the smallest cca battery I could find. The folks who bust drives are doing it with heavy duty batteries and cables that they no longer need.
