'53 JD 70 tranny oil leaking into pto

I'm quite sure oil is leaking outa the tranny in my 70 and flooding the pto housing. I assume there is a seal in between, what kinda job is it
replacing it and is the seal still available? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Yep & Yep... The seal is available from deere & Yep it's a Job. Whole Rockshaft housing
has to come off. Sometimes the Live Hydraulic lines seem like they are welding in, battery
box bolts twist off, along with the floor board bolts. Not easy & it's heavy...

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]POWR-TROL AND POWERSHAFT HOUSING[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the housing (Key 2) and the oil seal (Key 8).

The housing has to be removed to replace the oil seal.

The oil seal [b:654c4848f0]<a href="http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/195501M1_PTO-Clutch-Drum-Inner-Seal_28307.htm">AA 5247 R</a>[/b:654c4848f0] is still available.

Hope this helps.

Shaft maybe worn and a new seal not totally effective . Could put the same 30 or 40wt wet clutch safe oil in both the transmission and pto. If the oil leaks , don't matter.

Been there, done that, got my T-shirt dirty....

They can be a bit of a project, it's kinda like opening Pandora's box, what else are you going to find while your in there. If your axle bearings are loose now would be a good time to take care of that.

All you really need is a good engine hoist to hold it up after you've taken the battery box and platform off to unbolt the rear housing. The battery box bolts will most likely be the most challenging, when I'd did ours the box was fairly new so the bolts came right out with no fuss. You may find the gasket at the top to be in bad shape, mine was allowing water to get into the trans through there.

Depending on how it's be used or abused you may find that the seal surface is worn beyond salvaging or like in my case the pump gear on number 27 was basically 1/2 gone and the clutches and steels were basically junk, the steels were peened over so badly from the years of working that they were nearly touching each other.

For the life of me I can't remember how much room is there but I can't remember if I put two seals in or not. Or it might have been two seals, one to keep pto oil in and the other to keep trans oil out. I had also seriously thought about putting a 730 rear cover on for real 3 point hitch, but the reality is I don't need it on there anyway so why bother, not sure if it would fit, but it was an idea.

That may be an option too I guess. I opened the filler cap cause I wanted to adjust the clutch and the housing is over full of gear oil. When I
shut the tractor off and put the pto in gear then restart the tractor it makes a loud grinding noise while running til I take it outa gear again. Not
sure if grinding is the right term but it's all I can come up with right now. This is the other issue I want to address but have no idea how to
diagnose it!
