John Deere 70 hydraulic pump leak

On my 70 gas, the hydraulic pump started leaking from a pin that sticks out which is close to the flywheel cover. This pin appears to have a snap ring groove at the end but nothing is in it. The pin can be rotated by hand and it feels a little loose. I've seen it rotate back and forth when the tractor is running and it even leaks when the pump is turned off. It is shown below to the right of the nut. Does this pin have seals on it that need replaced? If so, how do I replace them?

That's the idler shaft for the hyd. pump. There's an O-RING on each end that's got hard and worn . Remove the hyd. pump to access this Gear and shaft. There is a pin that holds the shaft in . Yes this shaft can do what you are seeing and is normal if every thing is good. Look closely at the bushing and shaft for wear .I would bet the bushing is worn .

The groove that you see in your picture is to help you get the shaft out of the bore. The shaft should not rotate - that would wear out the governor case. The pin that Don mentioned is missing/sheared if the shaft will rotate. My 630 and my 50 both have only one o-ring on that idler shaft. The other end of the shaft fits in a blind bore in the governor case.

There are two large washers, one on each side of the idler gear. When you pull the idler shaft from the governor housing, don't let those washers get away from you and fall down into the engine. They'll probably stick to the sides of the gear and come out with it, but mebbe not.

There is only one oring on that shaft it is to the out side of the gov case . if the shaft is turning in the case the case may be worn out

This would be time to consider the pressure lubrication update to the idler shaft.
Some tractors were operated without ever disconnecting the hydraulic drive even though the hydraulic whirled hundreds of hours Without a powertrol lever being operated.

B & D has a different use for his tractors. He turns the pump on if he decides he needs hydraulic assistance. The rest of us expect the hydraulics to be operable at the touch of a lever, without killing the engine and shifting the pump in gear. That being said, here's the modification that he might be talking about.

There were tasks such as hauling forage wagon boxes, manure spreaders etc that did not require hydraulics. Why do you think that Mother Deere incluided a hydraulic and pto disconnect

Likely because it was cheaper to do so on the existing models without a lot of
modification necessary to make the hydraulics 'live' Ben

I'm not arguing with you Glenn - we've hashed this before. You don't use the hydraulics every time you start your tractor, but it's very rare that I use one of my tractors without needing the hydraulics.

Re-reading my post, it sounds like I was being critical of you, and I regret that. I could have worded it better, and I apologize for the poor choice of words.

It's all ok. I make more and worse oversights than that.

Years ago when those tractors were made we didn't use the hydraulics as much as we do today. When I was a kid we had the hydraulic pump and PTO out of gear quite a lot, in fact probably all summer on the 630. All it did was haul manure with a ground driven spreader and rake hay with an old steel wheeled hay rake. On occasion it pulled bale wagons. Today the hydraulic pump and PTO on that tractor are never disengaged.
