Mannheim JD 2040 1976 - Starter not engaging

My 2040 started earlier this spring on two separate occassions about a week apart. Last week I tried starting it and it rolled over, but did not have enough battery power to get it started. I pulled the battery and charged it put it back in. Turned the key and had some electric noise but didn't roll the starter. Bought a new battery, charged it and cannot get the starter to roll. Any diagnostic help would be appreciated before going to the local dealer for service. Thinking it's the starter or the solenoid that needs replacing.

clean or replace all clamps and connections first. Then check the solenoid. last thing to do would be the replace the starter. Ben

Has battery ground cables been relocated from attachment to sheet metal to engine block or starter mounting bolt? Next one might consider mounting a starter relay as pictured below. Starter relay can give exciter(S) wire more amperage when in start mode than factory wiring. Relay onlyfrom JD is RE164448 Starter Relay - ADD 25.37 USD

Hook your volt meter up at the starter and tell us what voltage you have when you hit the key to start it. It shouldn't drop below 9v under load.

Battery ? There are supposed to be two large batteries in there with a total of about 1600CAA.
As previously stated the factory ground/chassis connection to the sheet metal was not a good idea.
There is an upgrade to the larger 12V starter used on the six cylinder 359 or 414 . Doesn't cost much more than the smaller starter .

Before buying new starter I highly recommend installing starter relay that I previously mentioned.

Along with battery power the factory thought necessary . No starter or relay will crank with enough rpm when the insufficient battery can't supply enough current and voltage .

Tap the starter with a small hammer and it may crank up. My starter has done that a few times to me. My Gator is bad about doing that.

Update: Thank you to all who responded with help. In the end a new starter was installed and the tractor now starts without issue. I cleaned and tightened all connections, tried but failed to remove the solenoid for replacement, whacked the starter with various wrenches at my disposal, and succumbed to the local JD service company's assessment and replacement. I would note that the reman starter they installed was significantly larger than the replaced starter. Makes me believe the wrong starter was installed at some point in the tractors 4 decades of existence.
