Oil consumption 1020 gas

Hello,

I've noticed that my 1020 gas is consuming approx. 1/2 quart of oil every 10-12 hrs of hard work. Compression check seems very good at 1) 150psi 2) 145 3) 145. Only smoke I see is at cold startup and when increasing the throttle suddenly from idle after warmup but not always. I'm using 15-40 HD this year but noticed similar results with straight sae30 last year. Is oil consumption normal for this engine? If not, what would you suspect is cause?

thank you

Valve guides will be part of it. 1020 has virtually no valve-stem seals. I would
also bet on just general wear in the piston and sleeve area. Last 1020 135 gasser I
yanked apart that was burning oil had worn piston-ring grooves (very worn).
Compression check did not show anything. Easy engine to "refresh" with new sleeves,
pistons, and rings. You can do it in one day (not counting any machine work to the
head if wanted).

Note you can install valve-stem seals without taking the engine apart if wanted. I
doubt it will gain you much though.

(quoted from post at 10:59:10 05/06/17) 1/2 quart a day I would not think is too bad. Especially if using hard. When it gets bad, spark plugs will foul.

I did notice the oil use after two days of plowing last month. Plugs weren't too bad or oily. I'll just feed her oil for now until I can do a rebuild.

Dad bought a '63 4010-D at a farm auction December '68. Seller said it "Burned a little oil". Tractor
already had the 4020 kit, factory rear tires around 50%. Had local dealer tune it up, repainted it, new
front tires (11Lx15), new rear tires, 15.5x38 8ply GY PowerTorque's. We thought it was as good as a new
tractor, Go out plowing with our new 5-14 plow with the Midwest plow harrow, was down in 3rd gear all day.
Then Dad was REALLY disappointed when he pulled the dipstick on the engine after one tank of fuel, bit over
6 hours of plowing and it was bone dry. From Add to Full was two quarts, took three quarts to get oil on
the very bottom of the stick. New routine became me running about 2-1/2 to 3 hours, Dad would bring me out
a can of soda and dump in two quarts of oil while the engine idled. Then I'd burn up the rest of the tank
of fuel. Ran it that way almost three years. The last winter we owned it we rebuilt it with M&W sleeves &
pistons, new main & rod bearings, rebuilt the head, new valve guides, all new seals & gaskets, then it was
more like a new tractor.

Your engine could run like that for another 500 to 1000 hours before you loose much power or the spark plug fouling becomes a problem. How many hour do you put on the tractor per year? At 50 hours per year it could last you another 10 or 20 years as-is. Keep the coolant and hydraulic oil in good condition, cylinder liner cavitation and brake shoe disintegration are common problems on those utility tractors.

Yep 50 to 75 hrs/yr for the past few years

I would not rebuild it for 1/2 quart under hard use. I have a 3020 that will use a quart per day under hard use but still starts fair and runs good enough that we won't rebuild it for a long time. It is now a loader tractor so it does not get hard use anymore. You can not buy many parts for the price of 1/2 quart of oil per hard day. If it starts eating plugs go ahead. Get yourself a Deere tech manual and you can do the job yourself basically just tear it down and find a good machine shop to do your head and rods and the crankshaft if you need to go that far and reassemble it.
