JD 720D/730D at work

I've been using a 720 and 730 to farm 80 acres and thought I'd post some pictures of what I did last fall and this spring so far.

First, here's the 730 pulling a JD 66 4-bottom plow last fall. I could only pull it in 2nd gear so the field took a LONG time to plow.

Next, here's a few pictures of the 720 pulling a 14ft Glencoe field cultivator. The field sure goes faster with this than with the plow!! Anybody else still farming with the 2-cylinders?

Why the moldboard plowing? That's pretty much a lost are in the upper mid west, in corn and soy bean country.

Are you plowing around the field? We used to do that with a fully mounted 3pt plow. Most all the plowing is done by collectors now. LOL

Yes, I plowed from the outside of the field and worked my way in. This ground hadn't been plowed in 25 years and was becoming very hard/compact. I think it's fun using these tractors for field work even though it does take a lot more time. It's amazing that I only use 20-25 gallons of fuel to work up 80 acres. Very fuel efficient tractors. Here's a shot of me plowing and the neighbor with his 4 wheel drive. Sure made me feel small on the old 730!!

You must have an eighty gallon fuel tank. I have worked many acres on a 720 and 730 usually used between 3/4 and one gallon per acre...

Looks like fun!

A few years ago I fixed up plows for my "G"
and my brother's "D". An uncle had a plow
for my brother's 4020 and another for his
own IH 686. For a few years in a row we'd
get everything out and plow a 5 or 10 acre
field. I was never ready to be finished.

Yes sir still use mine some the late B the most and my LA and hopefully my G again when its done.

I'm a solid geography nut and always appreciate it when folks tell us roughly where they live. Would you be so kind as to tell us where this
is?

Thanks

This is by Princeton, IL. Just curious if anyone on this forum lives in this area?

While not quite from the area, I'm from Malta, IL near DeKalb, IL.
However my other hobby, rocketry, happens in the Princeton area, 2 mi west of Rte26 @ CR1850E & CR2400N. Is that any where near you? I'd love to stop by and chat. I'll be down there for two days the 27th and 28th of May for a launch. Or if you know that area, stop over at the red Mercury Mountaineer.
You can text or call me @ 815 seven six one 2 nine 00.
I've got nine two bangers. Two 20 series and seven 30 series. No 330 though... And plows. Several plows... And a BW disc. Jeeze, it starts to add up when you start counting in your head.

Yes, that's only a few miles away from where I'm at. I'll give you a call in the next week or so and hopefully we can meet up.

I installed the sickle mower on my 40 today and cut down ditch banks before we plant corn this weekend. Does that count?

Here are some photos of the 730 planting corn with the 7200 8RW planter. Only used about 22 gallons of fuel to plant 80 acres! It pulled the planter good in third gear at about 1000 rpm.
