4440 steering motor leak

I have a 4440 that leaks hyd fluid on left frame rail and left side of front axle. After reading up on this I believe the piston seals are leaking. My question is do I have to pull front end out to fix this or just left frame rail. Any tips on rebuilding this steering motor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can reseal the motor in the frame..but one thing to keep in mind the housing "could" be cracked in the bore where the plug goes in.. I had one of our 4440's leaking like that,, I resealed it twice till I found a crack was causing the leak,, some where along the line it got a big "Shock" in a tile blow out or some thing.. look it over good as you go into it...I hope it's just an O ring,,but they hardly ever fail on the plug...

It's been leaking since late 2012. Here lately it's starting to leak more, I want to get it fixed before I start in hay fields. If housing is cracked, where do you find one at? Where do you suggest blocking at to support tractor so frame rail can be pulled off? Thanks

I'm not sure where your located, but they should be available in most salvage yards, ..I block them up under where the clutch housing and the engine come together, high enough to let the front axle down out, I use a fork lift for this, then pull the side frame where the leak is to do the looking, if it is cracked lift the fuel tank off and slide the housing out of the frame.I will see if i have some pictures here for you,,I just did one a few weeks ago..

Normally motor leaks at shaft seal not sides.
Are you sure it's not leaking at a line or
fitting.
Salvage yards are full of them.

I agree clean it up good and see if you can see where the leak is actually coming from. The crack I am thinking about come from the front wheels hitting hard on some thing, this will turn the steer motor into a "Pump" sending a shock wave of pressure back through steer system, I have seen it split the steel pipes supplying the motor and on older tractors I have seen it blow the steer valve apart. I had a 4020 come in several years ago that the guy had been coast starting on a big hill near his barn to get it started, one day he didn't get it into gear and it smacked a tree hard, blew the steer valve apart, it looked like a dropped pumpkin,, he said fix the steering and to go ahead and make it start on it's own..

I'm in southwest Mississippi. Not any salvage yards down this way I'm aware of. Pics would be great if you have some. Is it possible to block up where you said, pull left frame rail and check this out without dropping front axle -if I support axle also?

Yes, it is..if it is just the cap leaking you can deal with that with out dropping the front Axel..
