4430 rear end/axle lock

New to this forum and needing advise on a 4430 rear end. Acts like axle lock not releasing, someone told me spider gears are out. However when it's cold (just started not necessarily outside temp) it's fine even jacked up one wheel and it turned fine until tractor warmed up. I am wondering what locks rear axle when you step on axle lock pedal? Hyd pressure? Could it be possible axle lock not releasing or aleast not all the way? I feel if spider gears out/locked up it would not turn on one wheel cold.
Thanks for any advice

Stop using it "Now" and open it up your spider gears are going out, and it will get much worse, like knocking the trans pump off or chipping teeth of the pinion gear...The diff lock is hydraulic operated, and they rarely go bad..

Welcome to YT
Before you remove rockshaft housing to inspect spider gears/shafts I would recommend to disconnect diff lock line(key6) then operate tractor to determine if locking problem persists or disappears.

I do remember "1" time that some thing was not letting the diff. pedal return, under the dash, causing the diff to partially come on..But "Most" of the time noise and action like described has been spider gears failing..and it got worse..quickly...Capping the line going in to the diff lock on the right rear upper part of the trans case will isolate it..

The 3 pinion is the only one that you can by new from Deere been that way for 20 years or more. they are all the same us less there is no def lock no difference in serial number or axle size.just more smoke B&D

Yepper all the part numbers for the housing sub to AR101618 which is a 3 pinion differential

There were several attempts to improve the differential on these, started out with the 2 pinon, then the 4 pinion, and settled out with the 3 pinion with the fixed center pin, also the left carrier bearing was increased in size on the quad/sychro range.. The 4430 went through probably more changes over all than any other production model, steering, injection system, top shaft improvements, out board shifter, piston desighn as well as the differential, this all climaxed after serial number 60,637 on 4430's and 34,665 on 4230's so if your looking to buy one of these I would highly recommend keeping this in mind...

I want to thank everyone who has replied and shared your knowledge!
I definitely want to isolate the axle lock before I pull the cab off. I just feel like if spider gears were out it wouldn't make any difference hot or cold....maybe just wishful thinking.
Soon as it dries up here again going to get to it. And thanks for the info on the difference on number of spider gears.
