jd1010 flywheel stuck

What to do? It has sat for a while & I can start it but cant engage the clutch to change gears......
Is there a chance of freeing it without splitting the tractor?

I'm not sure you will be able to do this, but worth a look.. removed the cover off the bottom of the clutch case ? Can you see the bolts holding the pressure plate and loosen them by raising spinning the wheel to gain access to all of them? You may be able to back off the bolts to the pressure plate a little, but first pull the coil wire and tie down the clutch pedal. Then put the transmission in gear and rock the rear wheel to free up the clutch disk with the pressure from the pressure plate released. DO NOT START THE ENGINE OR ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE TRACTOR WITH THE PRESSURE PLATE BOLTS LOOSE. THEY MUST BE RE-TIGHTENED/ TORQUED BEFORE DOING SO !!

Unless we're talking about a different model, the 1010 doesn't have a cover you can remove to access the clutch plates w/out splitting? Neither of the 1010's i've owrked on have had access to the plate without splitting it. Try what Tx Jim said, if not yo'll probably have to split it and remove the plate. Not too hard of a job, probably will take a day.

My reference is to the 1010 Utility Tractor as shown on the JD online web site. Search for 1010, book 749 Utility Tractor, Alphabetical Index C, Under Clutch Housing. Item # 26 is the cover I was referencing. Now being able to loosen/tighten the bolts in that confined space may not be doable..
However if he is talking about the 1010 crawler that is a horse of a different color..
PS: since the edit function is not working, please disregard the comment about tying down the clutch pedal..

Mnethercutt is 100% correct there is no access point under the clutch housing remotely close the flywheel.
Item #26 in the parts listed that you are referring to is a cover that is only used on tractors with out a PTO. This opening in the clutch housing is where the PTO clutch actuating arm would be.
