530 power steering issues questions

Noticed oil below the front of the tractor. Pulled ps dip stick and oil was near the top looking kind foamy. Checked dipstick by plugging the bottom hole and one of the top 2 holes on either side of the top of the dipstick and did not seem to vent.
Steering still works very well.

Should the dipstick vent?
Would the oil leaking be from over pressure and over flowing from an over flow some where?

After sitting over night the oil level dropped and does not look as foamy.

Any next steps are welcome to isolatefix the problem.

That was also happening to my 520 when I first got it. Mine turned out to be the bottom o-ring on the steering pedestal. After I changed that it stopped leaking. good luck with yours. PS, I thing the 530 might be better because the steering wheel is slanted up. With the float-ride seat the steering wheel on the 520 is right in your lap... with a steering knob on the wheel you have to move your knee every time you turn the wheel or you hit your knee. Years ago I had a 50, and wasn't aware of it, but was fifty pounds lighter.

Do you have your seat all the way back on the track ? I never noticed that and am pretty big.

Yes Mike, And I don't why I didn't notice it on the fifty, but it was over fifty years ago when I was driving the 50 around. time flies.

Randy,

Just spent most of the winter chasing the same problem on a 70 gas standard. Mine seemed to be getting oil from the crank case as the level seemed to go down in the engine (hard to pin point without a dipstick like the 70 D has) . For that reason rebuilding the pump was the first thing done with new pump shaft included (that was over a year ago). Leak seemed to increase so pedestal was rebuilt with new o-rings and vane seals. The leak was still there so I drained the system and refilled with hydraulic oil to locate the leak as oil was being drawn back through the radiator and blown everywhere by the fan. Had to remove front sheet metal (AGAIN) to find the leak. The only thing I could see was oil being forced out the dipstick vent and foaming oil in the resivor. All lines were checked by dripping oil over fittings with a medicine dropper then resealed using teflon paste instead of tape. The suction line at the pedestal seemed take oil or had been sucking air (maybe). After all this it still wanted to leak at the dipstick vent after it got warmed up. Really stuck at this point, almost decided to put another pedestal on that was acquired for another tractor but I really did not know much about it other than it looked good when I went through it this winter . Running out of options and at the end of my rope on this one. LAST thing I tried was to drain the system (AGAIN) and refill with John Deere PS fluid, which I always have used until I could not stand to see it being leaked everywhere. Since I replaced that hydraulic oil the foaming has stopped with no leaking at the dipstick vent and front sheet metal is back in place. May have to change the PS oil again as you can not get it all out but at this point I am satisfied with the function I have. What they say about John Deere power steering oil for two cylinder tractors is true, use it! GOOD LUCK. Dan

Mike; I've had another John Deere guy ask me the same question. Next time I get tos a John Deere show I'm going to take my measuring tape and look for a couple of 50s. Theirs one coming up in June in Michigan. Any time you want to talk tractors, give me a holler.
