JD 790 And bush hog.

I have a JD 790 2wd and was wondering if it will handle a 6' bush hog. Most of what I have read says a 5' is more of a fit but I won't be mowing anything overgrown and actually not very much at all. Just some field roads and edges of roads. I would like the 6' better as it will give me a little room beyond the tires. What do you guys think?

I have a JD 850 and a 5' cutter is all it can comfortably handle, both power-wise and weight-wise. In fact, I actually got the 5' JD heavy duty cutter, and had to take it back and trade for the ligher duty one because although it would pick it up, I could then lift the front end off the ground with one hand.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of wondered about that too. It does have the weight bracket with 5 40lb suitcase weights and the bracket is full. Don't know where else I would add any front weight.

some weights have a handle cast into them and I have used heavy flat bar to add extras on each side , where there is a will you can find a way.

If the 6' is too much for the tractor I have (the way it is) I will get a 5'. The amount I am going to use it won't justify any extra work, weights, fluid, etc. A 5' will be fine but will only cover the width of the rear tires by an inch or so but it WILL work. Thanks for all the replies.

I'd get myself a 5 foot flail type mower. They are usually made offset to get closer and under things they also mow better. Sometimes they are heavier but the weight is in closer.
