does any one know if an old stiff flat belt can be softened up and made usable after sitting for who knows how long? i have one i found in a building on a farm we bought a couple years ago, i tried to use it to start a tractor but when ever i would let go of decompression it would just slip and came off the pulley. keep in mind that this was on the first day of January and the belt was cold which didn't help matters any i'm sure. i think some of the surface of the belt is flaking off, so maybe there is no saving left of the old belt, but if there is a way i would be willing to try it.

I have used home made syrup for years. Get the belts tight and don't put too much on at a time. Let it roll without a load on it till you hear the sucking sound.
