Assembling 3020 diesel using john Deere kit there is two orings in the piston liner kits one red and one black. In a package with the piston pin retaining rings is four more orings they are black and are the same size as the liner seals. parts book and manuals shows two seals on liner.
What are the other four orings used on

There should be a paper in the kit telling you what to use and where. The red and black are what I would think seal the liner. I think the red o-ring is for sealing the coolant side of the sleeve and the black one is for oil but my memory isn't what it used to be.

Of the 3 the black 'flat' one goes into the liner up to where the liner side steps up,(not clear to the top of the liner), the other black one goes into the bottom groove, the red one goes into the top groove,, and like Kent suggested if there is an extra one ad it to the middle groove..and who knows why they packed the extra 2...

The red o-rings are designed to swell up when in contact with coolant - thus why they face the coolant area. Also why you only use soap on them. Some oils will make them swell up and you do not want that to happen until the sleeve is in place.

Hi something tells me from years ago that O ring kit is used on more than one application and it was cheaper to put all the rings in every kit, Than run separate kits with just a couple in.

It's like some motor gasket kits where they give you the 5 different options for a thermostat gasket and you throw the 4 you don't use away or store them in the draw for a rainy day. Over the years Dads farmed and I've fixed equipment we have the draw full of leftover stuff!.

When we quit lot 223 at the auctions probably gonna be all this odd useless left over stuff . Somebody else will buy it for $5 for their might need it one day collection, and probably sell it at there sale to another guy for $5 L.O.L
Regards Robert

That is correct Robert,, and I have box fulls of odds and ends gaskets from the left overs, I hang the common ones up,,and after a while I pitch the ones I am sure will never be used..another habit I have is to double order the common gaskets, like clutch housing gaskets ect..it helps me to "Pull the Rabbit Out of the Hat" once in a while...
