I have a JD 2640, with transmission problems. I really have two problems that may or may not be related. First i have a clutch pedal that will not come back up on its own. I have to reach down and pull it back up. Second and much more serious is, when i am going uphill the tractor will stop pulling. There is no change in the sound of the motor. It like the tractor is shifted into neutral. I have check all the fluid levels and they are all good.

Sounds like you only have one problem and it is the clutch. Might be more than one thing but sounds like all of it is clutch related. Tom

That is what i thought, but i don't have any problems shifting. If the Clutch is going out wouldn't i have a hard time shifting??

Not if it is slipping, which is what it sounds like. Lube the pivot for the clutch
pedal and make sure there is at least an inch of free play in the linkage.Ben

Is spring(key 12) MIA? Does your tractor have option of hyd reverser or hyd hi-lo?

Yes the spring is MIA but it has been for a while the Clutch problem is new. I do NOT have a High Low. I just have the 8 forward and 4 reverse gears. It doesn't slip all the time and it get worst the longer i use it.

The repairs will cost more and take longer if you keep using a broken machine .
There is the pedal free play issue and some of those had a grease fitting on the throwout bearing slide.

If you do go into it and replace the clutch also check into an update kit for the clutch pedal shaft. I worked for Deere back when the 50 series were out. and I remember some of those models had an update kit avail. that the new shaft had grease fittings on it to keep it lubed up. (maybe it has it now) Right now I'd try and lube that shaft up and readjust the clutch fingers and then reset the free play. Book will have different procedures depending on what pto option you have.

I pulled of the cover on the side and looked for the grease fitting thinking that i had found part of the problem. I could not find any fittings.
