R startin/pony motor valve set.

(quoted from post at 16:14:17 04/24/17) Does anyone know how to set the valves on a John Deere R model pony motor?

You need to buy a manual and find out how to remove the intake manifold assembly from the top of the motor.
The pushrods are adjusted next to the camshaft.
It's a water out and new gasket job, not something for a tune up!

I actually found it digging in the manual
last night, thanks for the help though. And
yes I have the entire Pony motor off, doing
a full gasket job. Figured I would set the
valves while I'm in there since it probably
hasn't been done since 1952 LOL.

(quoted from post at 13:09:33 04/25/17) Estes did you get my massage on the crank frieght

I saw where you had put the shipping, and I gave you my email to contact me. I never did see anything in my [email protected]

A lot has happened since our last contact, and I'm not actually ready to purchase it at this time. If you're okay with it we can still exchange info, and if you still have it available whenever I'm ready we can make the transaction. It's up to you though, I understand if someone else bites on it and you need to get rid of it.

If you do take it to bits, I for one, would appreciate a set of photos. I have been suffering with water in the oil for three years. I am hoping that this winters repairs where I found the cylinder studs lose and with no sealant, could be an answer. I also changed the sealant to JB Weld Ultimate black RTV after fine filing and sanding the heads flat (in situ).

So far so good, but I have the suspicion that the new JD gaskets R521081 have some new white filler material in that is designed to seal when hot, but of course the R never gets that hot. Thinking about solid copper gaskets if this does not work...

I can get some pics up soon. I've got to get some time to sit down at my computer for more than 5 minutes. I replaced all of the gaskets on the Pony motor, set the valves (only one was off), and set the clutch per the maintenance manuel. So far... everything is good. Strange thing though, when i pulled the right head, there were TWO head gaskets... stacked!!! My Grandad ( which is where I got the tractor) had already passed and I'll be getting no answers as to why that happened. I know that this tractor used to belong to the highway department, so who knows.

I'll keep an eye on the oil/water issue, and hopefully it's gone. Btw, I saw the white filling too. For $165 for a gasket set, i hope these things last!!

Good morning "Russ in the UK"

In 1975 I had a Head off the main engine JD "R" at a machine shop, Valves and Seats. I was informed there was a "sleeve" available that would be inserted into the head(Bores)were the FUEL INJECTORS are placed. The Machinist was 75 + years of age. I had the gentleman install the Sleeves. Apparently these Sleeves were a "JD" up grade as Coolant was apparently a problem in the area of the FUEL INJECTOR bores?

I have no idea or any other information on these Sleeves:

Bob thanks for your reply. It is water in the oil of the pony that I was referring to.

Main engine was on dynamometer at Bedford steam rally, belt drive 48.5HP, so not a lot wrong there! Made her bark though!

Could well be your head studs then, I'm not sure if the head stud holes are blind or not. No doubt others will confirm.
Obviously the inlet manifold is also the water manifold, so any gasket problem there could also be the cause.

Russ in the UK:

You possibly own a JD R Parts book?...if not here's a schematic and Gaskets for the PONEY MOTOR:

I've noticed, by viewing the parts book some times a problem can be solved:

Sold my JD R and JD R parts Tractor in 1983, but kept all Service Manuals, Operators manual, and Parts Catalogue:
