2240 changing hydraulic filter

Hello:

I always have issues when I change the hydraulic filter. Often I have to do it a couple of times before the rubber packing is properly seated. I follow the manual instructions, i.e., put the
packing in the groove and then the filter element and the cover. Is there a trick to make it work the first time?

Thank you,
Paul

the trick is to fill the grove with gun grease as you tightening up housing turn slight just enough that the housing is aligned

Thank you - I got the part with gun grease. On the tightening part, I am understanding that I should come as straight and centered as possible, such that I do not move the rubber packing. Did I get this part correctly?

Thank you,
Paul

As the cover draws into the housing, rotate the cover to make sure it is not cocked or binding. Grease will help hold the packing in place. Some aftermarket packings will not stay in the housing without grease but Deere ones are a little larger diameter and stay without grease.

Check the parts book and ensure that nothing in the past has stuck to the filter and has been inadvertently tossed.

Thank you - now I understand what Ben was saying. One thing that makes it a bit more difficult for me is the fact that there is a hose connected to the the housing. This hose is going to the loader. I might look into disconnecting the hose before I put the housing in, and then reattach the hose. I suppose I should be rotating the cover few degrees, probably back and forth, is that right?

Thank you,
Paul

PS: I do have the original Deere packing.
