JD A Powr-Trol plug/adapter??

Hello. Got talked into buying another tractor. '49 A with a 45 loader on it for $500 a few weeks ago. Took the loader off of it to work on it in the shop, and the P/T plugs the guy had screwed into the housing are a new one for me. I was going to just turn the release arm, pull these two plugs out and put in the dummy plugs, but this doesn't have a release lever like my 50 or 60 has on it and these plugs actually screw into the housing and have a spring behind them. Never seen these before and in my SM-2011 manual, I don't see any diagrams of something like this, so not sure how to put the standard plugs in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]POWR-TROL VALVE HOUSING (A ONLY)[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the oil plug (Key 9), adapter (Key 23), and adapter nut (Key 24).

Unscrew the adapter nut from the adapter and remove the current, new "coupling".

Insert the oil plug [b:654c4848f0]AA 4960 R[/b:654c4848f0] into adapter and replace the adapter nut.

Take a look at the photos below of the oil plug [b:654c4848f0]AA 4960 R[/b:654c4848f0] and adapter nut on "Old John" Nancy's 48A.

Note the opening in the end of the oil plug.

Hope this helps.

James,

That explained everything. That diagram you posted must be from the parts manual and not the 2011 manual as I don't have that in my book. I've got manuals and parts ordered as we speak (4-27-2017)but they won't be here until the weekend.

I have those exact caps that go over the adapter plugs, but they are built into the "Tee's" this guy had plumbed into the hydraulic lines. I would have ran one hose from the Powr-Trol under the tractor and then split it left and right and went to the cylinders, but he had the Tee right into the rear of the tractor and 2 sets of hoses going over both axles. The cap you show I need is built into these Tee's, so I'm going to have to search around and find a set of those so I can put my regular plugs back into it. Tractor other than that looks to be in decent shape. Engine is free and carb is already rebuilt. Loader is in excellent condition (no leaks, no cracks, no welds) so hope to have her running in a week or so and see what I've got. Don't think I got hurt on it at $500. (Knock on Wood).

Thanks a million for the pictures and the info. You answered everything in one email.

Thanks,

Does anyone have a slang term for these A3140R adapter nuts? I did a couple of searches online for them by the part number and came up with only one. Some old E b a y listings show them as a retainer cap and Powr-trol retainer and I was wondering if there was a better term to use for a search.

Nice tractor and loader combo. You may know this, but. . . Note the half-circle clip that goes in the groove. You have to have it for the outer ring to hold in plug. It's the breakaway part in case of a mishap. Haven't bought one in years as I bought several last time. Mother Deere is mighty proud of them. Good Luck!

Thank you. Those fell out (brass 1/2 clips) when we took the loader off last weekend and I put them in a safe place. I saw where they came out of, but wasn't sure what they were for. Thanks for the info. I did locate two of the adapter nuts, so am fixed up. Just waiting on parts to show up.
