B piston ring end gap

Working on a 37 B, std bore, piston is snug in bore, skirt diameter is in spec. Got a set of rings for it and I am seeing end gap in range of 0.050in. I would expect about 0.015+/-. The shop manual says nothing about that spec that I was able to find. Talked with a manufacturer's tech rep and got no helpful answer. What do you guys think/know about this? Normal with old 2 cylinders or bad parts? I am temped to order a ring set from a different manufacturer but would like to hear what others have experienced with this job. Thanks, George

Where are you measuring the ring gap? As I'm sure you know you need to use a bare piston to push the ring squarely down "back" in the bore to the least-worn part of the ring travel range and measure it there.

Below is some info by ring GURU Dave Reed, note that he states that the fit of the ring in the "width" of the ring groove is far more important than the end gap.
Ring fitting

Have you measured your actual bore diameter? For every .001 of overbore you get an extra .003" (.0031415...... to be exact) ring gap.

not enough information....changing pistons? Aluminum or original cast....if original cast and your bore is standard just by the normal standard John Deere rings and not be concerned....now if you had bored another bunch of questions....extras allowance for aluminum pistons...etc....just don't have enough information....

(quoted from post at 20:04:38 04/27/17) I was thinking it is .003 to .005 per inch of bore, correct me if otherwise.

Guessing you are too arrogant to go the the site I linked???

The link you gave says 3 to 4 thou per inch of bore. Right, I know that, so 4.25 bore is 4 time 3 equals 12 plus 1 for the 0.25 which totals to 0.013 in. I would like that gap, and would be ok up to about 0.020. The link you gave and I did read does NOT tell how to make the rings longer so the gap is not 0.050+ but is in the range I need. I got a 6 cyl car that I had to fit all 18 rings to because I had to use the next bigger overbore, as the size I needed was NLA. That was back in'73 when I did that one so this is not my first time at this. So tell how to make rings longer thus making the gap acceptable. The parts book lists a 0.045 overbore but the vendor did not have a listing for that.

Orig B1R pistons which are orig stock 4.25 in bore. Really piston is not the issue. Problem is rings not long enough to close the circle and give the desired end gap. Or did Deere spec end gap of 0.050+ in.? Or were the rings made wrong, and if you believe that never happens, well you just might believe that Nigerian email with $$$ for you. And that one piece of info I can not find in the shop manual for B or 720 or 40. So the ? here:: good to go as is or bad product... That's what I want to know.

I would guess that the bore is worn so much to give your wide ring gap. Have you actually miked the bore? After all these years it is far from 4.250.

I would measure the bore and piston diameter, close ring gap will not matter if the piston rocks due to clearances.
