JD M final drive oil seal question

Do the final drives need to be removed in order to change the oil seal? Or can it be done by simply removing the tire? I have a parts manual/service manual but I only looked at it briefly. My leaking seals are making a mess on the back side of my rims.

I want to say the order goes large nut and lock washer, quill, and seal is in the quill for the outer seal on the axle stub shaft. Maybe someone like James Howell can chime in but I think it can be done without removing the final drive. Hopefully that is your leak and not the seal on the upper shaft in which case yes, you would need to remove the whole final drive.

Thanks, I just looked at the parts manual and you are right. I guess the hardest part is going to be trying to get the cast iron hub off the splined shaft. Looks like a nice project for after my clubs plow day this weekend.
