720 power steering gear removal

My power steering system on my JD720D is leaking out the bottom, so I am in the process of tearing it down to replace the seals. Currently I am having a problem with loosening the steering gear. I have had no luck hitting from the bottom like the manual says to.

My question is; if I jack up the front end so the wheels are off the ground, and if I then remove all the bolts that tie the pedestal to the steering cylinder to the spindle quill, and then if I hit the spindle from the top with a sledge hammer, will this jar the gear loose?

Not likely to get it loose that way, the cylinder is still sitting on the tractor frame, and the vanes are attached to the center shaft and can not go down because the bottom quill is sitting on the frame. Take the whole power steering ped out, take all the cylinder bolts out and suspend the ped, then you can drive down on the loosened top cap screw and the gear will pop loose. You will likely have some power steering oil spill out when it comes loose, so have a bucket or tub under it.

Reading this, I don't think either of you has a CLUE as to what you are doing.

NO need to take ALL the bolts out, every other bolt is long/short and half the bolts simply hold the vane steering cylinder together, and the other half are longer and hold the vane steering cylinder together and extend down into the from casting to attach the whole assembly.

Had two apart this past winter, one while still on the tractor, the other is a unit I bought to put on a tractor that does not have ps. I used quite a bit of heat from a Map gas torch (like a plumber uses) that seemed to help. Either way I always end up using wood blocks and even used some fiber glass (plastic) wedges to hit under the gear to drive it off.

Is there some way to loosen that steering gear by hitting the spindle from the top without having to remove the whole pedestal assemble from the tractor? I am having no luck hitting the gear from the bottom.
