Friend of mine wants me to replace the
reverse gear and whatever else i find
wrong while doing the job. Whats
involved in doimg this job ? Thanks.

Before you split it in half,do some pressure checks, it will save you a pile of money. It is rare for a powershift to lose reverse.Sounds more like a shift valve or linkage problem. That being said, if there is a clutch pack slipping, due to wear or a bad sealing rings, a service manual can walk you through the pressure checks to lead you to the source of your problem(s) The clutch and brake planetary discs are spendy, as are the steels. To go through the whole powershift pack and planetary brake pack, with new clutch discs and steels, along with the sealing rings, gaskets and other misc parts can easily get to the high side of $4-$5000, maybe less if you can locate reman/rebuilt clutch and brake packs.

Check and make sure the reverse/forward linkage is working, this shift happens when you move the shift lever left and right in the nuetruel stall, the rod does not need to move much to make the shift happen, pull the cowl and look it over..

Here is a copy of the shift schedule, as you can see 3 different elements are engaged for each shift..a total B3 failure is about the only thing that would cause this if the shifter is okay..

If you don't know how those PS's work there will be a learning curve and the necessity of a factory shop manual, and LOTS of time.

Unless you care to learn all this and are prepared to present your buddy with a HUGE bill at the end, this mite be a job to walk away from.

Just say'in.

Tim. I was hopimg youd read this and give me some insite as the problem. Thanks !!! The owner has someone partially tear it down. Been sitting apart for a few yrs now. Owner said theres a drum with gear teeth missing ??? Ive seen the tractor but not the said gears yet. Hes got a shop manual hes gotta find first then get to pressure testimg the system as you stated. Thanks again !! If i do the job i will keep you informed..

Not much you can do in the way of pressure testing after it's apart...take some pictures when you get back to it,,and maybe we can make some sense out of what is going on with it...it's never good to go in on some one else's tear down...

Thats why im nervous to tackle the job. The guy did not tear into the trans he just removed the rockshaft, hood, seat and transcover . Didnt really look that hard but did notice he stopped before he split it. Charged them a pile of cash and never returned !!!

If thats all that he did it will not be hard to sort out..I would put the rockshaft and top cover back on and get it started to do some test,, I will be glad to walk you through it when your ready..

well i know one thing if some one has me work on a tractor and it has a bucket full parts with it it well cost a lot more to fix it ..

I'll sit in on this round table discussion . If you can get books ( shop manual) , & if top of transmission covers are off . Can jd44 remove valve body & put air to clutch pack & brake pack and watch the packs in-gage if hit the right hole ( behind valve body). You may at least hear air passing past seal ,backup ring? If did a air psi check and did not find any leak w/air . Just put new gasket on it .I think in shop book it says that one of gaskets that can go bad ,Along with clutch valve housing gaskets.
