john deere 4010 wont move was going down road in high gear went down little hill and started free wheeling stop tractor and now wont move in any gear when put in gear sounds like clutch engages have breaks pto works can roll back and forth even in park . where do I start to look what might be wrong

More than likely you either tore the center out of the clutch disc or the facing came off. My 4020 did that a few years ago when we had about 1000 feet of hay yet to chop. We hooked a 3020 to it and pulled it the rest of the way thru the field with the 4020 powering the chopper. A clutch job is not the hardest thing to do. Get yourself a Deere tech book and you can do it yourself. Tom

"More than likely you either tore the center out of the clutch disc or the facing came off."

That was my first thought, but it wouldn't explain why "Park" doesn't work, ASSUMING it has been working.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to remove the the clutch inspection cover and see what may fall out.

If it isn't the clutch and is in the transmission, or farther back, what would some other possibilities be?

If the differential broke, or the pin came out, usually there would be noise and the potential to lock up.

Differential center pin has broken...You can maybe see it when you remove the bung hole plug in the rear..

I am sorry I missed the part about the tractor moving in park. I had my thoughts formed before I finished reading the question. My old brain sometimes does not get everything like it did twenty years ago. Tom

I'm with you Tom,,I have been doing so many of these models that I even see them in my Sleep..Darn it... As I was looking at the post, I was fairly sure the clutch center didn't go out since he was on an easy pull, and then the "No Park" part kinda told on the differential pin..
