John Deere D Fender Styles - Poll

I wanted to take a quick informal poll of all those out there who might have a 1927, 1928, or 1929 John Deere model D.

I'm currently restoring my 1928 (SN 56748) and I'm curious as to whether or not my fenders are correct to this tractor. I have tried searching several sources and even spoken to Kevin over at Detwilers, and I'm starting to think that my fenders are not correct.

In the parts catalog (PC0658) there are two types shown:
What I call the "Fat Rib" similar to item 1A.
And the "Skinny Rib" similar to item 1C.

It looks like the break point of the "Fat Rib" to "Skinny Rib" fenders happened around late 1928 or early 1929.

So I ask, those who have a 1927, 1928, or 1929 model D, what type of fenders do you have? Is there a defined break point for one type to the other? If you can, include your serial number to better understand when this change might have happened.

Thanks for everyones help
Jesse

I used to have a 1927 D keyed flywheel but ser# after the spokers. Not sure if that was 30,000 or 40,000 ?? But I think those 1C ones looked like what it had ? I might have an old picture of it I'll have to look.

Looks like the parts book says you need the 1C fenders(narrow rib). Fat-rib fenders ended at ser.# 49736

Thanks.

I noticed that as well in the parts catalog. And that's what made me, at first, think I should have the "skinny rib" version... Which is what I have. However, doing some research and looking at photos of other tractors, it was very clear that not all model D's after 49736 have the "skinny rib" fenders. It looks like after 49736 the "fat rib" fenders were widened slightly but still remained with the "fat rib". I didn't find evidence of the "skinny rib" 1C version fenders actually being used until 1929.

Maybe what I have is correct, but then again, maybe not?

I bought my 27 D 53 years ago when I was in fifth grade. I was told by the JD dealer that in the middle of
27, JD went from 12" wide fenders to 15" wide fenders. Mine was built in Jan of 27. It had and still has
12" fenders with the wide rib. Serial 45695

Thanks Ken

That is sort of what I was thinking might be the case. So in Mid 1927 it sounds like Deere changed from 12" wide ribbed fenders to 15" wide ribbed fenders. Now I need to determine when they made the change to 15" skinny ribbed fenders.

I don't know if that change is something Deere would have recorded. Might just have to keep up the research.

Thanks again!

I found the picture and that 1927 D had the 1A style on it with the 2 heavy ribs more in the middle of the fender.

I believe the fender change you are refering to happened at about 68800.At the same time the fuel tank was made bigger, different hood, and steel vs wood platform . about the time of the 1929 d Paul

Thanks. I think I might have the wrong fenders then. I wonder how common it was for farmers to change out the fenders? Were the dealerships supplied with the skinny rib style as replacement parts?
