JD A Popping out of Gear

Or the third gear is so worn as to be slightly rounded and they tend to "walk" out of gear. A somewhat common problem on a well used tractor. Good Luck! John

Could you provide me additional explanation on what the "tapered brg. on the bottom shaft" is, where it is located and how it can be repaired? Thanks!

(quoted from post at 06:07:53 04/21/17) See my additional question regarding your first answer.

My 51 A had issues and it was not the gears being slightly rounded off on the edge from shifting, that's just a natural consequence of 60 yrs of use. It was the worn out bearings on both the upper and lower shaft. While I had it apart, I also replaced the axle seals. When the bearings are worn, the shafts get out of align, putting side load on the gear, pushing it out of engagement. Its more than an afternoon job.
