JD 720D Power Steering Dipstick

On my 720D, I noticed the power steering dipstick has a hole straight thru it. Is there supposed to be a filter or plug in the hole to keep the dirt out? I see that my 730D doesn't have this hole in the dipstick. Does anyone know why they're different? Also, is the fluid level supposed to be checked warm or cold?

The parts catalog shows there were two versions of the PS fill plug/dipstick for the 720 as serial numbers progressed, then a third part number for the 730.

IIRC, some (or all?) versions of the fill plug/dipstick had a sintered bronze filter at the top to allow venting of the PS system, (there's no other way it's vented) while keeping dirt and dust out..

As to checking the level, I don't know which is correct, warm or cold, but I wouldn't expect the level to vary enough so that would matter.

Does anyone know if the filter that presses into the top of the dipstick is still available from John Deere parts? If so, what is the part #?

Even in the old paper parts catalog I have the sintered bronze inserr isn't shown separately of the cap/dipstick.

If you want to risk twelve bucks, you could order the little sintered bronze disc that goes at the bottom of the airhorn in old Schebler carburetors and see if that could be made to fit, DEERE or Schebler part # 95-78.

I have used a cut down NAPA fuel filter, also sintered bronze, part number 3050. Used J B Weld to secure it in the dipstick.
