Thanks for the pictures they are great! I am doing the same thing to a 67 4020. I have so many questions I don't know where to start. Would you have time to visit on the phone sometime?

I used a Deere 4320/4430 muffler,on a 4320 elbow off set a bit to make it come through the opening.

Thanks ,,this one did turn out well, and sounded good, this combination makes it all fit nice, much better than the M&W kits, althou they were great in their day..all the M&W stuff was ahead of the game back then..those guys were doing some innovative thinking...

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this... but I'm SOOOO happy you got a camera going in the shop
That there set up looks about factory to me

Tim, what about your offset turbo coupler? looks to be made out of stainless. Never seen one like it before, are you making them yourself, or do you have a fab shop doing them. I've got a 4230 that I would like to put a 4430 muffler on to quieten it down, but I really don't want a turbo. Any Ideas?

It"s made out of steel tubing, and I do make them myself here in the shop. I cut a new 4430 coupling in half and then weld the tubing into it. To match the off set is a bit tricky,I cut a few at a time while I have the saw set up. As for the 4430 on your 4230 I would have an adapter turn out with a couple of set screws in it to fit down over your existing manifold,,but keep in mind that a turbo muffler is a bit more open, and the turbo is what actually quiets things down a bit.

Looks neat and tidy.
Just out of curiosity. Is there any practical way to plumb an air to air intercooler in front of the rad?
Realizing the chassis and drive train doesn't need the extra power capability. Just thinking of lowering the intake/combustion chamber/exhaust temps at the same 125HP level.

There is not much extra room between the radiator and the fuel tank for anything extra,,but you could cut the fuel tank down a bit and "make" room,,I haven't thought about that kind of cooler before, I know I don't like the water style coolers at all, they make things nasty to work on..and it don't seem like the are they efficient to start with..the air to air is much better...

Yes there is a way to do that. A neighbor has an intercooler on his 4020. He also has a 4020 with a 466 in it that has ran thousands of hours. Looks factory to.

Will the intake manifold flip over upside down? Would the pipe work down, under the left side frame and up from underneath, just ahead of the rad?

I have seen it but dont remember the details. He never lengthened the frame rails like so many do. It looks factory. Guess some people are real handy

Tim ,I have a 71 4020 that is the only tractor I have that I would not sell[well maybe sometime] that is the same quality as the 4020 in picture. We used to have M&Ws on some of our tractors before JD offered them.I have a complete kit W/pan/fan,etc. but have not put it on because you had to alter the front of hood just a little but I did not want to damage it this way.The pan holds 12 quarts so I was just going to sell it as they sell well.Question would it be possible to buy some of your enginered parts if so I would like to call or email you 515-290-4336 Larry I really like that you share your knowledge to us enthusiasts.

The 4020 in the picture is a 1970 with 2900 actual hours on it, a very clean tractor that belongs the "Electrician" that posts on here a bit. In the old days I put several of those complete M&W kits on 4010/4020's they worked out well but I didn't like to cut the hoods. The bigger fan and oil pan would be a plus to add with this home made kit, any time you can ovoid high engine temperatures the better and longer life the engine will have. As for the little home made parts , I will help you sort them out or send you the one that is "ornery" to make, the turbo-elbow adapter, getting the correct angle on that the first time took a bit of time,,with several "mis-fires"....

Hello Tims,
I was wandering if using a LM3 turbo used on the IH with the shorter exhaust turbine housing would improve clearance? Did you try?
Also what about putting the air filter under the hood? Would a setup like the 4620 works, or like a 4440 with a smaller diameter air filter? Of course all hydraulic lines would have to be bended and extended out of the way...

Maybe the newer Donaldson air filter with the cartridge removable from the side would be a good fit under the
hood, biggest deal would be to get fresh air to it.

Looks like excellent work all around, Sir. I have a similar project that I just started. Great job. Thank you for the pics, too. It's helpful to see "what it's supposed to look like"

Tim,
I am currently putting a 4430 turbo setup on a 4040. Do you still make the pipe for the offset turbo coupler? Also what do you do about the top radiator hose (radiator end 2" and 4430 water manifold 2.5")?

Thanks
