Still not charging

Ok, so I'm stumped w/ this. my 1010 isn't charging the battery. I've followed John T's charging guide, couldn't identify the problem, so i'm going to list off everything I know here and see if someone can tell me what my problem is.

-I have had the genny removed and tested. It works like it should.

-I have installed a NEW VR purchased from this site.

-I have a new John Deere strongbox battery.

-I have polarized and checked the groun don the new VR.

-I have re-wired the whole tractor.

-I have a wire running from the gens A post to the A post on the VR.

-I have a wire running from the gens F post to the F post on the genny.

-I have a wire running from the VR's BAT terminal to the starter. It is touching the battery cable.

-I have checked the continuity on all wires. No problems.

Anybody have any clue what i'm missing? I know there's a 4th point on the VR that I didn't mention here but I can't remember where its going off the top o fmy head, I think the key switch?

If the Genny and VR are all good THAT SHOULD CAUSE THE BATERY TO CHARGE BUT IT WONT BE SHOWN ON YOUR AMMETER as charging
(or discharging) current isn't passing through the ammeter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In order for the ammeter to correctly register charging current INTO the battery or discharging current OUT OF the battery
the VR's BAT terminal wires to the LOAD (NON Battery/Starter) side of the ammeter. The ammeters other SUPPLY terminal is
what wires to the Battery/Starter.

Even if the ammeter is by passed as you did, however, if alls well at fast RPM Id expect battery voltage to rise to at
least 13 up to around 14 volts subject to RPM and battery state. Once shes well charged 12.9 battery volts wouldn't scare
me too bad as 12.6 is fully charged

Wire it up right n see what happens. If wired right if you turn on lights not running Id expect a - discharge but running
at fast RPM Id expect a + charge per the ammeter

When you say ammeter, are you referring to a multimeter or an actual device on the tractor designed to measure voltage? If you're referring to something on the tractor ( like the gen light), then I don't have that hooke dupl. The tractor is in a restore state and right now i've only got the wires hooked up to run the tractor, no lights or anything else. I'm measuring voltage on the battery w/ a hand held multimeter. I'll check voltage on the VR from the BAT post and see what it says. Thanks for replying!
 
Ground the field terminal to the generator frame with the tractor runnng a third throttle and check the voltage. I suspect a cheap voltage regulator is causing the problem. You can use a screwdriver or jumper wire, your choice. Scratch your grounding device around a bit to get a good ground.
