JD LA Cultivator question #1

What is the purpose of this spring on the threaded rod? The top nut is what hold the cultivator in place. If you remove it the front cultivator will fall to the ground. I don't understand why that spring needs to be there, it serves no purpose as far as I can tell. Is there a chance that nut on bottom side is not suppose to be there? If that was the case if the shovel hit something it would allow it to come out of the ground and the spring could act as a cushion.

I got looking at it today because I wanted to raise the shovels a little bit. To do that all you have to do is screw the top nut down, which brings up the whole front cultivator. I had to slide the spring out of the way because of all the dirt that was built up in the threads.
