Trying to stir up a little dust

Hit it with the disk early and let the sun and wind get to it, dried nicely so late afternoon hit it with the drag and then threw some grass seed down.I guess I don't already have enough grass to mow

I don't have mine either and I'll have to get mine tomorrow. Nice G though. This is mine. Just took a carb cleaning and rebuilt magneto to get her running.

Mark, me thinks that dust is a little sticky. Nice looking old GM. Had my eyes on one, but it disappeared. Found out the fellow died and kids sold all his tractors for scrap.

(quoted from post at 09:37:20 04/15/17) I'll be the one -but what is a GM ?? I have only really known about a G or a GW.

What makes it a GM??

Here is what G MAN had to say way back in December of 2002.

"Bob, "GM" stands for "G" Modernized or Modified depending on your choice of phrases. They were built during WWII and after when Deere wanted to raise the price of the "G" after it was styled. The War Production Board mandated that if they wanted to raise the price, they had to redesignate the tractor, or no increase would be allowed. Deere wasn't happy about it, but decided to call it the "GM". After the war, they went back to calling it the "G". There was no difference between the last "GMs" and the first late styled "G"s other than the serial number tag. The change was made sometime in the 1947 model year. They built fewer "GM"s than regular styled "G"s, so they're more sought after, although all "G" series tractors have been popular among collectors forever. I think there were somewhere around 13,000 of them built, but I could be wrong on that."

Thanks for that bit of information! I would not have ever guessed the reason. Learned something -again!

It also points out that being stupidly officious is nothing new for our government. It was not enough that the G was substanially redesigned in order for them to allow Deere to raise the price, they insisted that Deere abandon their model protocol as well. Makes one wonder if other manufacturers got to raise prices with minor changes but with a new model designation.
