A friend is looking at a 1979 vintage 2840 with loader--hours unknown at this time--will get a look at it up close later in the week--other than the obvious things to look for, is this one to check out further--or throw Tim's "light the fuse" fix and run??

Use an antifreeze test strip to check for active corrosion inhibitor. Pop the clutch cover from the left side of the belhousing and lool for thin or burned clutch plates. I can't recall if there is a grease fitting for the throwout bearing on those or not ? Pull the transmission filter and screen and look for bad news. If they are brand new and brand new oil somebody maybe hiding something? Loader hydraulics supplied from the SCV will function but at a reduced speed and with some hydraulic noise .

The best thing for him to look for is a different model John Deere,2840s have lot of issues....

THANKS TIM--that's what I was thinking--this guy needs a good 'un--will look further---BTW--still nursing my 3155 along with the old "filter cone gone issue"--I keep making a little progress--haven't lit the fuse yet--LOL

Hey Ozarks,
I was working for a John Deere dealer when the 2840's came out. They had a lot of problems from poor starting, head gaskets, lousy fuel injection, clutch issues to name a few. Those that got properly updated and repaired turned into fairly decent tractors. Long way from my favorite Deere. I would take a 2640 in a New York minute though, but I wouldn't take a 2840 unless it was super cheap. Good Luck!

The 2840 is not so good but the 2940 would run 20000 hours given it has cool hard and hygard.

They are just little sisters with the same bad habits...when they are good they are very good ...when they go bad they are "very" bad...

thanks Tim--as always--what can I look for in that approx. size--2wd is ok--4wd better--with a JD Loader---like for him to find a good Green one--but would not wish my 3155 on him--LOL

IMHO the JD tractors built in Waterloo in the same era such as 4030,4040 had much better hyd systems than the ones built in Mannheim. The later model Mannheim built tractors such as 6100 or 6200 were better also

Thanks to all!!--how about a 2555?? or2550??

By the 50 and 55 series most of the bugs were ironed out.
Some people curse the Deere utility tractors . We had a 2020,2120, 1840 & finally a 2355 from the 1972 until 2015 . Used for daily feeding of live stock, rooting out large stones, loading manure, hauling hay wagons etc . Outside of filters, oil, fuel and batteries. The only major service work was a set of rings and a valve job on the 2020 gas. Not even a clutch.
No hydraulic problems as the oil was not contaminated with water and the filters were regularly changed.
Now my Uncle's tractor...... he set the throttle at about 1800rpm and slipped the clutch in 4th gear to control speed. Never spent a cent on it if it still ran without service. It has had a clutch, some oil flushing, lots of filters, cleaning up and repair/replacement of bashed, broken and smashed components.
I suspect most of the problem tractors are owned by problem operators.

(quoted from post at 19:37:16 04/12/17) And will still kick the butts of other colored tractors of the same era :)

B&D--I grew up with a 2020 that I really liked--would out pull our 4000 blue tractor on a round baler, by far--lots more usable horsepower--it was a real horse for its size--a good bush hog tractor also--I really don't know what the actual horsepower was on that particular tractor, but it would really roll the smoke when it leaned into the governor.

I'm not trying to get in a color war just stating facts. JD 2020 was rated at 54 pto hp while Ford 4000 was rated a 45 pto hp. So I hope the 2020 would outperform the 4000 on rd baler.
