Regulator diagnosis?

1010 battery ain't charging. Took the genny to a service place and it was tested and worked great. I've re-wired the whole tractor per the original wiring diagram. Still not charging. VR was new out of the box, but when I first hooked it up after polarizing I heard a pop when I tried to start the tractor. Took the cover off and checked the wiring, didnt see anything burnt or frayed. I've tried one of the guides on here, ground the field on the gen and the VR, bridging the bat and arm terminals, bridging the bat and field terminals. No real differenc.e Never seen charging get above 12.9 volts @ 1200 RPM. Any ideas? Is the genny supposed to have a ground wire?

Thanks.

If you have "polarized" from the "BATT" terminal to the "FLD" terminal of your "A circuit" charging shystem you have DESTROYED the VR.

WHATEVER gave you the idea to do THAT?

You say you "bridging the bat and field terminals" OOPS

I have seen instances where a genny shop had the genny polarized for the more common NEG ground then farmer Billy Bob takes it home and installs it in a POS ground tractor and doesn't correctly re polarize HOWEVER you say you polarized so hopefuly that isn't the problem??

The polarization by momentarily jumping BAT to ARM is fine and trying to ground the Gennys FLD to check for charging is fine and temporarily by passing the cutout relay (BAT to ARM) is okay, but I don't advise jumping BAT and FLD.

TO YOUR QUESTION YES the genny needs a good frame ground ALSO the VR needs a good frame ground.

Once you're sure its polarized get her running and temporarily ground the gennys FLD post. If it charges then but NOT otherwise, the VR is bad or VR isn't well grounded.

Is the new VR compatible with your tractors ground IE POS or NEG ???

I've polarized the sucker at least three times. I know the VR has a good ground because I've held a multi meter on the vr base and another part of the tractor and I get no resistance. I'll check the gen, but I did ground the gens field terminal and I found that the charging SLIGHTLY increased...like from 12.6 to 12.9...

Subject to batteries state of charge and RPM (and a good VR), right after a start Id expect something like 13 to even near 14 volts HOWEVER once its full charged a battery voltage reading of 12.9 is acceptable. Insure good connections and good grounds and a tight belt, but again with gennys FLD grounded that's the MAX charge the genny is putting out, so that 12.9 sounds LOW MAYBE THE GENNY ITSELF AND NOT THE VR IS AT FAULT???????????? Maybe just use her some and give it time !!!!!!!!! but you may have damaged the VR ???

I know it's not the generator. Had it tested at a generator shop and it was working fine. putting out max volts/amps/whatever it puts out.

Cool, so if the genny is fine when you dead ground its FLD post you essentially by pass the VR control function SO THATS ALL YOURE GETTING OUT OF THE GENNY. Another possibility of faulty VR is the Cutout Relay (between BAT and ARM terminals) is burned and resistive and dropping voltage so you might temporarily jump across those two when running (by passes any cutout relay problem) and see if charge increases????????
