Purchased a JD 2510 Gas tractor last year and it ran well for 6-8 months and then started to die whenever a load was put on the engine. It then would start and die at idle in about 10 seconds. I rebuilt the carb, seemed to help, then started again. Noticed gas was flowing through the carb when tractor was shut off and into oil. I changed oil and now have a ritual of closing the gas flow whenever I get off the tractor. I missed doing it for an hour one day and it started having issues again. So that is part one, looking for suggestions as to what might be going on.
I also decided to change out the points, coil, distributor, rotor, etc. Once I had everything installed, no spark. My starting questions are around the coil...wire from distributor goes to negative on coil, is that correct? Should I see 12V on the positive side of the coil? I only see 5.5V. Let's start there with this one and see if anyone has some advise.
I am a newbie to tractors for sure, and right now I have a big piece of yard art. Any guidance or help will be appreciated.
