I just bought a 1974 John Deere 830. The tractor only goes in reverse. If I shift it into other gears, the tractor continues to drive in reverse. I bought the tractor knowing the problem existed, but I am now seeking help on how to fix it. If anyone knows or has some ideas please advise.

Thank you

Likely, something has happened to shift rail #25 or shift fork #21.

COULD be as simple as the shift lever #8 got out of place and left the rail and fork in reverse gear position.

You will have to remove the transmission cover #1 and have a look.

Ditto what Bob stated about removing shift cover. My guess is shift tab outlined in blue that is spot welded to shift rail has cracked & fell off. If that is the problem I've seen the tabs welded back to shift rail.

Well.... I took a peek to see what was inside. The area circled in blue ( which was very helpful ) did not appear to be damaged or broke. The rails themselves seemed to be aligned correctly indicating that both shift levers were in the neutral position. The shift fork #21 I don't believe I could see when I lifted that cover.

Thus far - Shift rails look like they are in the correct orientation and not broke.

Please advise on the next step...

Thank you

Quick update: I have not had the time to pull that rockshaft cover yet. I did however unscrew the knob where I assume fluid goes into. It appears as though there is a "shift fork" visual there........ Not sure..... regardless when shifting any of the gears that never moved. ( Maybe those two things are not related )

Also, fluid level - it appeared to be really low. I am unfamiliar with this tractor but visually many of the gears are highly visible. I assume there must me a fluid level indicator? I just want to make sure, low fluid is not causing the issue of the tractor being stuck in reverse.

This weekend I am optimistic so hopefully I can take that cover off.

Hdy oil dipstick will be by operators right heel when sitting in seat. Only gear that can be seen in hyd filler hole behind seat is the ring gear for differential.

Well I was able to take the rockshaft cover off. I didn't exactly know what I was looking for. I assumed I would see something broke or mangled but none of the above. I was able to watch the transmission switch in and out of gears as I was shifting them. I did notice however that the shifter on the Left, seemed to go into ( Neutral, Park, High 2 ) I could not get the shifter into reverse or into Low 1. ( remember from the beginning the tractor will not drive forward), Seems like it is stuck in reverse.

I don't really know where to go from here. FYI - I must of jacked something up when I put the rockshaft cover back on b/c my 3pt wont go back down now.

Any advice is much appreciated.... Thank you

On not shifting into forward could you see fwd/rev collar engaging fwd gear?

Do you have rate of drop screw under seat opened up(CCW) at least 1/2 round? It's also possible that follower(key 9) isn't correctly oriented in rockshaft control linkage.

Yes I think the linkage may not be situated correctly in the housing. It was less then graceful when putting that housing back on. ( super heavy )

Anyways the shifting: The shifter would move into neutral I could see that. Then When I went to put it into park I could see that happening. Also, High gear seemed like it also worked. But when I tried to put it into reverse or low gear, it was almost like the tractor was bound up. It would not allow me to shift into either of those gears. It was like it was physically stuck the shifter would not move forward.

Also, not sure if this helps... But when I run the tractor in any another gear besides reverse the tractor wants to stall out. Like it's in 2 gears....

That sounds as if a gear that was intended to rotate on a shaft is galled to the shaft. Has tractor ever been towed very far without engine running?
