1947 D head nut torque

Restoring a 1947 JD "D". What is the torque specification on those head nuts. Your knowledge is appreciated. Thank you in advance. Fred Wilke Hanover Pa. 17331

I'll be interested to read the responses in this thread. When I put together a chart on torque specs for Mr. Thinker's Almanac, those for the D and GP are the only ones I couldn't find. Have been told since the GP should be 125.

Field Service Bulletin 147-S, dated May 15, 1944, was the first reference of torques, according to the late Duane Larson. That bulletin referenced only cylinder head torque recommendations, and only by stud diameters. Later bulletins were more inclusive and FSB 163-S specifically mentioned the model "D" cylinder head studs were to be torqued to 2500 in-lb (which is a bit over 208 ft-lb).

I believe the "GP" had 5/8" diameter head studs, so based on the information in FSB 147-S, the torque should be 1500 in-lb (which is 125 ft-lb).

Here's a partial scan of that FSB.

LOL, that is the first place I looked to reply to this post. "Mr Thinkers Almanac" 3rd edition...............oooops D not listed.

Richard, when you update the next edition of the "Almanac", you might consider an additional note to the cylinder head torque for the "H" in accordance with FSB 147-S necessitated by that one center stud that is 3/4" diameter, but is hollow for oil delivery, and which has a unique torque value of 2150 in-lb (179 ft-lb). The torque value in the "Almanac" is correct for the other six studs that are 9/16" diameter.
