Shut field in starters..WHY?

I think all the old tractor starter motors I worked on were SERIES wound while ALL the old Generators were SHUNT wound. The article Bob linked may answer your question.

I don't claim to know anything about them ..but...when looking to get my starter re-built / replaced for my '66 GTO, I went to a very reputable starter/gennie man and told him I NEVER wanted to have the "Gm hot hard start" problem with this car. Knowing how hot Pontiac V-8,s run and with 10.75 : 1 comp ratio , he proceeded to tell me not to waste my money on those so called "hi torque" speed shop starters , that he would build mine up to out perform those. he did just that and for $ 75.00 , he said he put a "shunt winding" in it. meant nothing to me. That started spun that engine over fast and even when hot, there was no difference. Just what I wanted and for a fraction of the $$$ than the speed shop stuff. So whatever it does...it flat works !
