Low Oil Pressure

Performed an engine swap on my 1010. new engine didn't have oil pump. installed pump from original, locked up engine after cleaning it up and testing it. When I first started it she had about 40 PSI of pressure. I check it the other day (I've added about 2 hours of running since I swapped engines) and now it's down to about 10 PSI and the needle is really shaky/vibrating. I didn't change the oil filter in the new engine before I installed, so I'm planning on changing that, but is the shaky needle a sign of another problem? What else could cause low pressure (I dont think the engine needs a rebuild, it was in really good shape and had good pressure at first)?

A vibrating needle is an indication of a main or rod bearing failure. The pressure changes wildly as the drillings in the crankshaft line up with the failing component. Were it
mine, I would pull the pan and plastigauge the bearings (all, or as many as can be accessed) The oil pump should have been clearanced before installation, the filter should have
been changed (I know you know this). THis engine has probably the worst reputation of all JD history, so every thing needs to be correct to keep it healthy. Jim

Is it safe to remove and check the bearings and if they're ok put them back on? Or should I plan to replace them? Also there isn't any knock w/ the engine and I haven't seen any metal in the oil pan, so could it be anything else? The fluctuation isn't much, only 1 or 2 psi, just really fast vibrations.

Check your pickup screen in oil pan.Could be clogged with sludge or debri.Had same problem with JD40 years ago.
