Bob did a great job explaining how a collar shift works. On a JD 5320 you have three options for transmissions: 1) cheapest, collar shift. So you basically have to be setting still to shift without grinding the gears. 2) Top shaft synchronized. Meaning the shifts other than the range shifts are synchronized. Meaning you can shift while moving slow and not grind gears. 3) Power reverser. With this one you have range and speed shifters but you have a forward and reverse in just about all of the gears. This shuttle is hydraulic and can be done without clutching the tractor.
