420 W, front axle

Gentlemen, I finally found a m4600t front axle for my 420-W. They are hard to find and seem to brake or crack.
Before I install it, would it be better to weld a steel plate across the bottom to keep it from cracking in the future?
This piece is cast... and would the steel piece do anything to make it stronger or no help at all. I don't plan to the uses the front wheels extended out, so this may help.

Thank you for your help

There is or was somebody casting new reproductions advertised in Green magazine.
The cause of breakage is when Bubba whips a chain around the front axle and give the tractor a yank.

A lot of times they break when the axels are pushed out and they do not put the spacer in (item #22) and they tighten the bolt up. At this point is crushes the center piece and breaks it. If they get lucky and it does not break it, it will eventually break as the axels are no longer supported on the ends and can work back and forth until the center piece breaks.

If the axels are pushed in to the point where they overlap then the spacer (item #22) is not needed.

Currently on my 430W, I have the wheels set to 60" on center and the spacer is required.
