5020 shifting

I am working on a 5020 that will not shift into 1,2,4 or 6th gear. Does not grind just wont go. Tractor is from an
estate and has been setting for a while. Has a synchro trans. Clutch peddle play is about 2" Pulled cowl cover off and
did not see any interference. Any suggestions?

Disconnect likage down by side of transmission and see if you can move the arms on outside by hand or small wrench.

There was a problem with 5010-5020 shift linkage that had to do with dirt under the platform preventing the shifters from moving enough to engage the gears. I read about it in some old service bulletins I have. But it sounds more like a problem with something on the top trans. shaft inside the trans. Hope I am wrong. I had a 5010 years ago and it was a big brute. I would much rather work on a 4020 due to the size of everything being so much smaller. The 5010,5020,4520 and 4620 are about the most expensive Deere tractor there are to put a clutch in as there are almost no aftermarket parts. Tom

I agree with Tom, but I'll add one more thing, "Run!"

5020s are good old plow horses, but when the trans needs work, you are gonna spend a lot of money real quick, and have the work done by someone who knows what they are doing. If it isn't done right, you'll be back.

Been there, done that.

Farmed with a 5020 for years and this wasn't uncommon. Like Kent said, probably a build up of dirt, certainly the first place to look. Never had any problems with the transmission, or linkage other than that.

5020 are different than other in the fact that the shifters don't go to the side but rather in a hole in the middle of the clutch housing that gets full of dirt rather quickly.

To fix that, I always remove the platform, set the control panel away, and pressure wash under the dash until everything is green again. it is also a good way to expose poor wires that may create a fire later.
There is a tunnel inside of the clutch housing right under the shifter arms that communicate with the outside under the brake pedal, I am sure that yours is full of dirt and this makes things worse.

Other than that, I had an issue with a 5020 that would not shift, like yours, but it was due to loose bearings in the top shaft. Had to put some better used parts to have it go again.
