John Deere 40

Hey there I'm a 20 year old kid just bought my first tractor a JD 40 now the guy I bought it from said it was a JD 40t which I assumes means tricycle and I did some reading apparently JD made the option to have the 40t be narrow front with two tires instead of one. I noticed now that I am starting to dink around with it that it looks like the pedestal is offset in the front looks like it is more to one side than the other. Is this a common thing to have or not? It doesn't look like there are any holes to switch where the pedestal is place and it looks offset from steering rod. Thanks for the help

Yes, the pedestal is offset to the right side (when sitting in the seat) of the tractor.

Pure speculation on my part, but probably offset for the hand crank.

Take a look at the photo below of the "notched" crankshaft pulley on "BW" our Model 40T.

Hope this helps.

there wewre lots of different 40s not all trycle, some were utilities and I saw one once that appeared to be a row crop with bigger rear tires and wide front. If you pick up an operator's manual it will tell you all about them. good to have for service and all

My version of the 3" offset is that it made it easier to watch the front cultivator - assuming you looked on the right side of the tractor.
