how to remove a flywheel on a G

I have used a half inch breaker bar but I can't get enough torque to loosen the nut. If I I put any more torque on it, it will break the break over bar. A three quarter inch break over bar won't fit. Any suggestions?

They have special wrenches for that. You are correct that a flex socket etc. will not stand the torque on those. Heating the nuts may help.

A 1/2 setup is NOT heavy enough to do the job. Even if you get it lose you will NOT get it tight enough when reassembling it. You either need the correct JD flywheel wrenches or make a 3/4 offset extension.

There are three pieces to the correct flywheel set. The pictures only shows two. There should be two of the smaller offsets. They are indexed on flat different. This is so you can get the full rotation on the nuts.

These came with the G I bought last year from the man that bought the G in 1961 and farmed with it until I bought it. I'd be sure they are correct.

Thanks to all for the replies. Looks like I will have to make some tools when I get some spare time. Wish I had four cheap sockets to weld on. This site is great to learn stuff from people that have experience!

I've got kind of a cheap 3/4 socket set I bought at a show a few years back and can use the socket that fits the nuts, then the shortest extension, then a longer extension then the breaker bar...the shack in the extension connections lets it go behind the flywheel and go on the nuts...but still doesn't slip when I "put the torque to it" to loosen or tighten the nuts

Ferd: You have part of the correct tools. The off set piece is one of the three pieces you would have in the correct set. The other wrench is actually the wrench you use to move the rear wheels on the 20-30 series tractors. The large end loosens the wedge nuts and the small end turns the pinion gear. It just happened to "FIT" the small end of the offset wrench for the "G".
