I have a JD820 3 cylinder that had white smoke out of the oil breather tube and the dipstick tube. The tractor was 2 quarts low on oil. I filled it with 2 quarts, it started right up, drove it into the barn (50 feet). I notice that the coolant now appeared in the oil, in fact the oil dip stick showed a very high level. I am trying to get an idea of the severity of the problem and I am looking into attempting to do the repair myself. I have ordered all the manuals (parts, technical, owners, shop etc), but am looking for advice before I start this project. I have never replaced a head gasket yet alone cylinder sleeves. I like to think that I am not a complete idiot (my wife might add some insights here) and have always been interested in machinery.
I was wondering if anyone had any idea of the likelihood of the problem merely being the head gasket (a repair I think I can handle) verse a more serious sleeve, ring, piston etc.. problem which might be more challenging. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also should I attempt any diagnostic procedures before I start taking it apart?
