What is the best way to support an engine for rebuilt?

I was thinking to set the block with crank vertical for complete disassembly and crank install, then horizontal for sleeve and piston + head installation.
How are you doing it, assuming you do not have any lifting stand and that you need to remove the crank?

I screw 6" bolts into the clutch housing holes and set them on their rear, then slip the forks of the lift in under and raise it up tp where it's the right height.

Yes,, and I have some pictures here some where,, I will look for them after bit. I screw an Eye bolt into the front end of the crank and lift it up onto it's end that way,, (pull the rear seal quill first) ,,and the head,,then set the crank out with a floor crane, and back in the same way,, I do the smaller 6 cylinders the same way, works good.. then I screw long bolts into the side frame holes and put my forks under them, to set the engine back in,, getting it close to lining up then a small ratchet strap lets it slid on the bolts to go into place.

Here are some pics, but not setting on end..

I have a rotating stand that I use for most engines but some IH engines I work on as you describe. Remove head and flywheel, Stand on rear to remove remaining components, then tip down upside down to remove the crank. The reason I don't use the stand on these is the mounting bosses are on the timing cover and clutch housing adapter so would not be able to do very much while on the stand.

Both shops I have worked in had otc revolver stands. Definitly
very nice and easy on the back!! But I just got done
overhauling a 361 IH engine and there is no place to bolt a
stand to that block so I overhauled it sittling on large wood
blocks. Sitting the block upside down to install the crank and
on its side to install the pistons. Not ideal but I could not see
another way??
