JD 70 diesel cranking motor coils

This is a 1953 tractor. Not getting spark to plugs. Looking at replacing the coils. Can replace them with the internal coils from like Steiner JDSO5 or do they need to be the external coil? If I have to replace as an external coil would I replace them with the 6V coil FXH2403 or the ABC011 from Steiner? Do I get the external coils somewhere else or change out the magneto for a Steiner JDS103? THan

Disconnect number 1 spark plug wire (front one on right side). Hook it up to a new plug and ground it out to the tractor. Crank the engine with switch on and check for spark. Do the same for number 2 plug wire (left side front). If you have no spark from both coils, make sure you have 6 volts coming from the ignition switch to the coils. Still no spark, check the condensers. It would be unusual to lose both coils, unless someone applied 12 volts to them. You may want to consider replacing the whole box with a new one. Then you're sure you have good coils, points, condensers and connections. What's the serial number of your 70D? They only made them in 1955 and 1956. Gas models, all fuels and LP's were made 1953 - 1956.

Trying to jump a spark from chassis with a dual plug wasted spark ignition system does not work like a single spark Kettering spark from a single coil and rotor system.

It works if both plugs are grounded for that coil. If you pull #1 plug wire and install a new plug and still have #3 hooked up, the #1 plug wire and new plug should spark when grounded to the tractor.

Let's say a coil and or coils are bad, was the magneto in the picture designed to have the coil on the inside or out side? Depending, where do I find replacement coils? Specifically, what part number/model number from where? Thanks,

Green Magazine has several vendors selling starting engine coils. There are two types of high voltage connections depending on the manufacture and two types of plug wires. Mix them and there will still a lack of spark, erratic spark or no spark.

The coils initially were designed to be inside the box. Pull the cover off and the originals might still be in there. The coils (X9295) are still available from JD but at an exorbitant price. Check with H&J Machining in North Dakota (701-652-3289), ask for Henry. They sell replacement coils for $67 each and plug wire sets for $26. If buy the complete coil box it's $302. Based on my experience the $302 coil box is the best deal. If you just buy coils you need to make sure you have a good coil center bar, points, condensers and the correct spark plug wires.
