Fix the Gen or switch to negative ground

I've got a 1010 with a generator that isn't charging the battery. I'm guessing it's the generator but I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot. I cleaned out the generator and sanded down all the metal to clean it off before I reinstalled it, and when I tested it with a battery it spun, but I still suspect it's the generator. Would it be better to get a minor rebuild kit for the generator, or switch to a negative ground and buy an alternator? Also do they make alternators built for positive ground systems?

Thanks.

Yes there are + ground alternators but most of them come from England and are made by Lucas which means they do not last well. There is not much you have to change to go to a - ground system. Ya you should switch the wires on the coil but that is all you need to do. Me I use an alternator of a 1980 Chev pickup no power any thing no AC cost is around $50 plus a core and at O'Reilly's that is life time warranty

For the look, you can go at a store like SummitRacing and buy an alternator that looks like a generator.
Those are made for Hot Rods, but would look good on a tractor, with this "original" look.
They are pricey, that is the only problem.

My Troubleshooting Procedure linked below has a more complete motor test to see if a generator is good or not, you might try it. Yes they make POS ground alternators they aren't cheap. Its easy to change over to NEG ground for either an alternator or a generator. Id check out the generator more thoroughly before anything else as it may be a cheap easy fix and no need to change grounds etc.
