John Deere 4230 PTO Shifter Won't Stay in Position

I have a 1977 4230 that the PTO shifter won't stay engaged or disengaged. I have to use a bungee cord to hold it in position. There is some play in the linkage but not sure if that is the problem. If I don't use the bungee cord to hold the shifter it will vibrate out of position. Any ideas on what may be causing this? Thanks

If it's not a power shift the detente lever in the operating valve has warped,or you have low transmission pressure, check the pressure first it should be 165psi, here is a pic of the lever, it's number 11 in the pic.

Check for dirt around the linkage under the cab. After spring fieldwork I would always have to clean the dirt otherwise the PTO wouldn't stay engaged when baling.

If its the detente lever how easy is it to change? Do you just access it from removing the side PTO cover? Thanks for the help!

You will need to remove the clutch operating valve body off the left side of the clutch housing, it will be in that housing, not a bad job, you will need 2 gaskets, and should change the 2 seals while it's o the bench.

For all the time it takes it would be prudent to ensure the transmission pump system is applying full rated psi to the transmission clutches and brakes.
Cheaper to repair a low psi problem now vs repairing a low pressure problem later plus worn from slipping clutches .
