JD 730 FLYWHEEL

Flywheel is missing or loose? If the old flywheel was loose a "new " flywheel will never ever properly tighten and stay tight on those crank splines. No matter how tight the bolts are torqued.
It's taper-lock time .

Have you considered a Tapper lock fly wheel?

Flywheel bore has been bored tapered:

Splined tapered wedge fits into flywheel bore:

As Flywheel is drawn up tapered wedge, assembled assembly becomes tight on Crankshaft:

I do know a "Tapper lock fly wheel" was the answer & cure for many 2 Cylinders.

I have to agree that taperlock is the only good answer. I had a flywheel that was tight, but had been loose at one time and worn the splines just a tiny bit. Prior owner had tightened flywheel OK, but cracked in in the process. Taper lock was the answer, but not a cheap one. If ring gear is worn too and has already been flipped once, that's another high dollar item. Makes you consider what the eternal reward should be for the chap who cracked it. I try to be charitable-I've done my share of stupid and probably not done. Good luck!

We had the flywheel on our 70 come loose. Dad got out a feeler gauge(took it apart) and we shimmed it up. It lasted 5 hard years of use before we had to buy a new one.

My first JD720 diesel came out of South Dakota on a machinery jockey's trailer. He stopped in the dealership I was working at. He also had a 620 WF that I shoulda bought too, but too much money at once... But I digress... The 720 had a leak or something. Anyhow, for some reason long forgotten, I needed to pull the flywheel off. Someone LOVED that tractor. They pulled the crank and welded the splines, turned it down smooth and cut keyways, and bored out the flywheel and cut matching key slots, just like the 820/830 setup. It was VERY nicely done. I don't know if welding the splined area made it weak or not, but I worked it hard upon occasion and it never gave issue. I sold it when I bought my house, never heard from the seller again, but I assume it's still working good.
