FWIW, I was told by a veteran JD mechanic years ago that every R-830 he ever saw that [i:73ec5cf9c0]did not[/i:73ec5cf9c0] have a PTO still had the bevel gear inside.
 
On the 80/820/830/840, the drive for the powershaft is also the drive for the transmission oil pump, so it should be on every tractor made, whether it had a PTO or not. All you'd have to do is take off the big rear axle cover, and add the internal driveshaft for the PTO (it slips on), and the appropriate rear cover, PTO clutches, etc
