1950 John Deere G

I am restoring a 1950 John Deere G tractor, basically from the ground up. I am wanting to replace the seals in the front steering pedestal. The pedestal has the roll a matic, and I have the pedestal off the tractor, laying in the shop floor. My question is , how do I get the top gear off so I can slide the shaft out the bottom? The gear is splined and it does not look like there is enough room to hook a puller on gear. I don't have the manual here with me as I write this, but it seems to make reference to a slide hammer, but the end of the shaft looks more like where a puller would set. Has anyone had any dealing with this? Thanks

Would of been easier to get it loosened when on the tractor. The weight of the shaft and frt. hubs helps. Loosen castle nut or bolt holding it in place. Using another bolt or nut to sacrifice is a good idea. Then use a BFH and give it a whack and it should pop loose.

I have a chunk of brass I keep & use for for doing exactly THAT! One or 2 solid whacks with a 48 ounce cross peen hammer & they drop free most every time!

While it was on the tractor would of been a good time to check your steering shaft end play and see if you needed shims under the eccentric and adjust eccentric . When you get it back on be sure to check all that so it wont have the death wobble going down the road.
